Flares used in Australia catamaran rescue

28/04/2020

Two men have been rescued in Australia after firing flares when their catamaran sank after returning from Papua New Guinea.

The men were rescued after setting off flares and an EPIRB after their catamaran ran aground on Bougainville Reef, in the North Coral Sea, 200km northeast of Cairns, reports 9News.

The men were winched to safety by a QGAir Rescue 510 helicopter. They were then placed in quarantine, due to the Coronavirus rules.

Rescue crew officer Joshua Crouch says the long-range rescue took some planning.
