Two major events for The Mission to Seafarers

17/07/2020

Leading marine charity, The Mission to Seafarers, has just celebrated two major events.

Seafarers Awareness Week, from 6-12 July highlighted the challenges faced by merchant seafarers and their families as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sea Sunday 2020 service on 12 July was broadcast online around the world for the first time. It included a message from the charity’s President, HRH The Princess Royal.

The events provided opportunities to mark the heroism of seafarers around the world and thank remarkable men and women, who, despite COVID-19 and other challenges, continue to keep vital trade on the move.

The Revd. Canon Andrew Wright, Secretary General of The Mission to Seafarers, says this year’s Sea Sunday was extra special.

“From London to Lagos and Manila to Melbourne, we believe there is power when we come together as a global community. We are united in gratitude, especially in recognition of the heroic work of seafarers, and in hope for the future.

“Throughout this challenging time, our chaplains and port centres across the world have been adapting their usual activities to safely meet the needs of seafarers. Connecting this Sea Sunday to everyone around the globe provides a great opportunity to thank so many for their dedicated service alongside seafarers.

“We are extremely honoured to share a message from our President, HRH The Princess Royal, with our other distinguished guests, as we celebrate our international key workers. Together we can show these men and women that we appreciate them and recognise the sacrifices they are making during this global crisis.”

The Mission to Seafarers offers practical, emotional and spiritual support to those on the sea around the world. It works in more than 200 ports in more than 50 countries.
