Smoke flare used in emergency helicopter landings

A smoke flare helped a helicopter land on a reserve landing pad after two emergency medical evacuations in Cornwall.
The first emergency was to evacuate a crewman from a tanker at sea.
As the Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team was about to start a water rescue training session, it was asked to help out with the medical evacuation.
Team members were asked to help with an emergency helicopter landing site at Boscawen Park, Truro, which is used if the hospital helipad at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, in the town is out of action.
After the Coastguard Rescue helicopter 924 arrived, the casualty was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Hours later, the crew helped with another landing of helicopter 924 in a medical emergency from St Mary’s, in the Isles of Scilly. The casualty was also transferred to an ambulance and taken to the hospital.
