Skye mountain rescue team uses flares in injured hiker rescue

Flares have been used to guide a rescue helicopter and airlift an injured walker to hospital who suffered a three-metre fall on the Isle of Skye.
Skye Mountain Rescue Team was asked by police to help a hillwalker who had fallen down a Munro. The hiker had sustained multiple injuries at upper Coire Banachdaich, according to the team’s Facebook page.
As the area was under cloud cover, the helicopter could not land. Twenty mountain rescue team members located the casualty on foot. The hiker had a broken wrist and cuts and bruising.
After giving the casualty pain relief and splinting their injuries, the team carried the hiker on a stretcher. They found a location where the R948 helicopter could land safely. The casualty was then airlifted to Raigmore Hospital.
The crew says, “Many thanks to R948 and their crew. Also, we’d like to give a shout-out to several mountaineering instructors and also a passing doctor who were in the vicinity and came to the casualty’s aid. They even helped with the carry too – much appreciated as always.”
