Shore lit by flares to aid rescue in fog

Flares lit up the shore during a late-night rescue of boaters lost in fog on Long Island Sound, New York State.
Riverhead police received a 911 call from a fisherman who said he and two others in a 10-foot aluminum fishing boat had lost their bearings in thick fog after setting off from Iron Pier.
Flares were lit on the beach in the hope of helping the lost boaters gain their bearings, reports the Riverheadlocal.com website.
The Riverhead Police dive/rescue team, U.S. Coast Guard, N.Y. State Environmental Conservation Police and Jamesport Fire Department all joined in the search.
Riverhead Police located the boat around one mile off the shore north of Aldrich Lane in Laurel on Long Island. The boat, with the three men, was towed back to Iron Pier.
The three fishermen were uninjured and declined medical attention, police said.
