Shetland flares amnesty attracts 700 items

More than 700 expired marine pyrotechnics were handed into Orkney and Shetland Coastguard in the UK during a September Flares Amnesty Day.
A total of 737 flares, most of which were hand smokes, were handed in for safe disposal, according to Orkney and Shetland Coastguard’s Facebook page. The event was for owners of private boats and non-commercial fishing vessels,
The oldest item handed in at the Staney Hill Quarry amnesty was from 1978.
The event was organised by Shetland Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. The coastguard staff practised social distancing and wore appropriate personal protective equipment.
