Search and rescue team uses smoke flares to mark drifting kayak

A search and rescue team has used smoke flares to mark a drifting inflatable kayak at West Kilbride, Scotland.

Largs RNLI Atlantic 85 lifeboat was launched and the crew used the flares to mark the location of the kayak offshore. This was to help with its recovery and for search purposes.

Also assisting in the April afternoon rescue were the Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 199, and the Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team.

The upturned inflatable kayak was spotted, with the seat and paddle floating nearby. Rescue 199 used smoke flares to mark the location.

On the shore, the owner of the kayak confirmed with Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team there was no one on board the kayak.

Dave Hewitt, Largs lifeboat helm, says, “Although the weather conditions were calm the offshore wind caused the inflatable kayak to quickly drift out to sea.

“The coast can be a fantastic day out for everyone, however, we would encourage everyone to respect the water, to understand the risks and to stay safe. You should check the tide times and weather forecasts before you go, and ensure you have a means of calling for help. Remember, in a coastal emergency you should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
