RNLI urges small boat users to carry flares

20/05/2021

Users of small boats should carry flares and other essential rescue kit.

That’s the message from the RNLI following the rescue of two fishermen in Dunbar, Scotland.

UK Coastguard called on the town’s inshore lifeboat (ILB) one morning in May after the crew of Gone Fishin phoned for help when the boat’s engine failed a mile north of Barns Ness.

They found the anglers and gave them buoyancy aids, before towing the vessel back to Dunbar.

A spokesperson says, “The RNLI’s advice to users of small motorboats is to regularly maintain the engine and always carry lifejackets and a VHF radio and flares. If you see anyone in trouble on the water call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
