Parachute flares help quickly locate casualty on cliffs

Parachute flares helped RNLI rescuers quickly find a person in difficulty on Arbroath cliffs in Scotland, in darkness.
Arbroath’s RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats were launched early one morning in March. They were joined by Coastguard and Angus & Dundee and Police Scotland rescue teams in the search.
The casually had been cut off by the tide at Whiting Ness. Using illuminating parachute flares and searchlights, the casualty was quickly spotted by the RNLI inshore lifeboat crew.
Cold, but otherwise unharmed, the casualty was rescued by the inshore lifeboat before being taken back to Arbroath Harbour to be checked by paramedics.
Arbroath RNLI Cßoxswain, Michael Marr, says, “Thankfully this incident had a positive ending, however, if you are heading out to enjoy the coastline always be sure to check the tide times and think about how this might affect you. Even in good conditions, the sea can easily catch you out.”
