New and improved Light & Smoke Signal far exceeds SOLAS specifications

22/09/2022

A new and improved Light & Smoke Signal has been introduced to the Comet range, which far exceeds SOLAS specifications.

The light output of the Light & Smoke Signal, which is coming soon, lasts 750% longer than the previous version and comes at no extra cost.

The innovative design of the new Comet Light & Smoke Signal unit features a flashing white light rather than the previous steady light, which exceeds the 15 hrs/2 candela demanded by the USCG. This valuable improvement gives rescuers more time to find a casualty in the dark, improving their chances of survival.

The Comet MOB Mk 9 also produces 15-minutes of dense orange smoke and is deployed with a lifebuoy to mark the position of the person in the water. The self-activating smoke signal has a unique all-round lighting system.

The Comet Light & Smoke Signal is normally mounted on a ship’s bridge wing attached to a lifebuoy. It is automatically or manually deployed to mark the position of a person in the water by day or night. Ships are required to fit at least two markers.

The metal transit pin has been replaced by a black plastic transportation cover, which is removed before inserting the unit into the float assembly. The light can be tested and turned on using the rounded, black plastic switch at the base and inverting the unit.

The lights are supplied inside the Light & Smoke Signal carton and are screwed into the holders on the top of the float, as with the previous version. Once inserted, the round switch is kept pressed in and the light is primed, ready to ignite when the unit is deployed and floats upright in the water. It is safe to use on petrol or oil-covered water. The lithium battery is sealed for life, so needs no annual replacement.

The Light & Smoke Signal is tested to survive a 56m drop into water (SOLAS 30metres) and is ideal for use on ships or rigs with high freeboard.
