Kayakers advised to carry flares
01/09/2020
Kayakers have been urged to carry safety equipment, including hand-held flares.
The advice came after two kayakers were spotted in the water one morning in August after their kayak overturned near St. Mary’s Island, off the Humber coast. One of them suffered a minor head injury when the vessel overturned.
The Coastguard was alerted. Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and also Cullercoats RNLI were paged to help rescue the men.
Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat arrived and brought the men back to Cullercoats and were given medical care by Brigade members.
The men had limited safety equipment. They were advised to purchase a VHF radio and hand-held flares so that they could raise the alarm if they got into trouble again.
