Illuminating flares used in night rescue

Search and rescue personnel used illuminating flares to help rescue four people in the sea at Blackpool, UK.
HM Coastguard Lytham and RNLI Blackpool were called to the Central Pier one night in July. They found four people in the sea – three of whom had been drinking.
Blackpool RNLI crew waded out to pull the casualties from the water. It passed them over to the coastguard and medics. Lancashire Police also attended.
An HM Coastguard Lytham spokesperson says, “To make sure there was no other people in the water, we set off an illuminating rocket flare to illuminate the area, after determining all people were accounted for, we walked the casualties off the beach and passed one of them into the care of North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
“Blackpool Police were also in attendance. If you see someone in distress in the water, do not attempt a rescue, you will put yourself in danger, leave it to the professionals and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
