Flares used in mountain rescue

After being stranded overnight on a mountain in British Columbia, Canada, in thick fog, a missing climber was rescued by a team who used flares.
The climber on Mount Seymour, in North Shore Mountains, Vancouver, failed to meet as arranged with friends one night in November. Its helicopter team, which had Night Vision goggles, was grounded due to the heavy fog.
After searching for some time down recognised routes and lighting flares and firing bear bangers, rescuers heard an extremely faint sound along the Pump Peak trail and fresh boot prints heading off-trail.
Responses to their sound sweeps got louder and they found the man, who had fallen down cliffs and waterfalls in the DePencier Gully area near a river. He was warmed up, provided with food and water, and treated for minor injuries.
North Shore Rescue thanked the North Vancouver RCMP and Mount Seymour Resorts for their assistance. “There is no better feeling for SAR members than finding a lost person and successfully returning them to their loved ones.”
