Flares aid father and son rescue in South Australia

An elderly father and son have been rescued after firing flares when their boat broke down in Australia.
Bert Perkins, aged 95, and son Rod were rescued between Thistle Island and Wedge Island, off the South Australia coast, one afternoon in January.
The pair, who were fishing, set off flares after their boat suffered mechanical issues. One motor turned over but would not start and the other would not go into gear, reported the Port Lincoln Times.
As their radio was not working, the father and son fisherman fired flares to alert other boats in the area.
Port Lincoln State Emergency Service were contacted by a boat in the area to assist in retrieving a stranded vessel 20 kilometres back to Port Lincoln.
Volunteer Unit Manager Max Coulson said, “It was a great outcome for everyone involved at the end of the day.”
