Flare aids rescue after boat collision

Boaters injured in a collision off Rhode Island, USA, have been located and rescued thanks to a flare.
Marine rescuers were alerted after the head-on collision between two boats off the Portsmouth coast.
They believed at least three people were injured in the incident off Potters Cove, Prudence Island, one evening in late August, but were not sure of the total number on board.
Portsmouth fire’s marine unit responded, as did the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force, which sent units from Warwick, Bristol, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the U.S. Coast Guard, Warren, Cranston Providence and North Kingstown.
Portsmouth fire service contacted one of the boats by phone and asked them to use a flare to signal to the search teams, which resulted in seven people being rescued.
