Flare aids helicopter rescue of stranded Maryland boater

A boater in Maryland, USA, was rescued after setting off a flare when his boat ran aground.
The boater ran aground in shallow water at Susquehanna Flats in Cecil County one night in May, Maryland State Police report.
The Coast Guard called Maryland State Police as it was unable to reach the boat, which was stranded in the middle of the flats. The Trooper 1 helicopter crew spotted the boater after signalling him to set off a flare.
The boater was loaded into a so-called “screamer suits” which keeps the person secure. He was then hoisted up to the helicopter. The boater was uninjured and was reunited with his family.
The Maryland State Police Aviation Command operates a fleet of ten helicopters from seven bases.
