Dutch mudflat walker attracts help with hand flare

A Dutch hiker was rescued from rising water on mudflats after setting off a red flare.
One night in July, the experienced mudflat walker near Rottumeroog, an uninhabited island in the Wadden Sea, was caught out in a trench by the water, reports the KNRM rescue site.
The Sea King Rescue 21, a SAR helicopter from the German Navy and also the Dutch SAR helicopter Coastguard 06 (CG06), were launched to help. The Sea King Rescue 21 was on the German island of Borkum, which is close-by.
The man fired a red hand flare so he could be seen in the darkness. He was hoisted aboard the helicopter and medical tests were carried out.
All was found to be well. He was then transferred to the lifeboat ‘Jan and Titia Visser’ in the Oude Westereems. He was taken to the rescue station to recover.
