Red flare aids yacht rescue

A red flare sparked a search and rescue of two crew in a yacht with a smoking engine at Bridlington, Yorkshire.
The alarm was raised after the flare was spotted in Bridlington Bay one September morning. UK coastguards asked Bridlington RNLI to assist and it launched the inshore lifeboat, _Ernie Wellings_.
They located the yacht, which had two crew aboard, near Bridlington north pier. Helm Joff Pearson, requested that the Bridlington all-weather boat Anthony Patrick Jones be placed on standby in case a tow was needed.
The yacht’s engine room was filled with smoke and the volunteer lifeboat crew stopped the engine. The yacht was towed to Bridlington harbour and the crew taken ashore.
Joff Pearson says, ‘It was a textbook rescue in calm conditions and the yacht was recovered without any issues. It was a great team effort and made simple because of the many hours the volunteers put in with the weekly exercises.”
