Flares spark sea rescue

Red flares seen off Eastbourne sparked a sea rescue by the RNLI.
Solent Coastguard asked Eastbourne RNLI to investigate after reports of red flares eight miles off the coast.
Volunteers responded to their pagers, some leaving the funeral of a former crew member, to answer the call for help.
The Trent Class Lifeboat located a 21-foot motor vessel with three people on board. It had experienced machinery failure. A local dive boat also arrived, having seen the flares, and stood by.
An RNLI crew member checked on the welfare of all on board and helped establish a towline to the stricken vessel. It was bought back to the locks at Sovereign Harbour.
