Flares guide air ambulance to injured base jumper

Flares were used to help an air ambulance land on the beach at Lulworth, Dorset, UK, and airlift a seriously injured base jumper to hospital.

Crews from Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team and Kimmeridge, paramedics, Weymouth RNLI’s in-shore lifeboat and Lee-on-Solent’s coastguard rescue helicopter were all called to help one October morning.

The casualty at Swyre Head suffered leg injuries and flares were used to help an air ambulance land on the beach. He was then flown to Southampton hospital.

Lulworth CRT assisted a South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust paramedic in locating the casualty and carrying rescue and medical equipment to the scene.

A spokesman for Weymouth Lifeboat says, “We were tasked by the coastguard to an injured man on the beach at Durdle Door with significant injuries, who had himself called 999.

“The man was a base jumper who crash-landed on the beach and unfortunately sustained serious injuries to his legs.

“The volunteer lifeboat crew started attending to him on the beach before handing him over to the medics on the air ambulance. He was taken to hospital in Southampton.”
