Flares enable rapid rescue of capsized boaters

Three men used flares to ensure a rapid rescue by Coast Guard crew after their boat capsized in South Carolina, USA.
A Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstander informed Coast Guard Sector Charleston that the 38-foot boat capsized near the entrance of Winyah Bay after taking on water.
The three men, who used flares to help the crew locate them, were all wearing lifejackets. They were rescued from the hull of the overturned boat and were taken to Station Georgetown with no medical concerns.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Charles Lowery, Station Georgetown boat crew member, says, “The mariners had all the proper safety equipment onboard, including flares used to help us quickly locate them. Our response time was quick thanks to the accurate position provided to us by the watchstanders at Sector Charleston.”
